What if clothes, hairstyles and accessories were much more than a simple matter of taste – a way of subverting dominant norms and inhabiting the world differently? Allures dissidentes. Apparences queer & représentation de soi du 19e siècle à aujourd’hui (Dissident Looks: Queer Appearances and Self-Representation from the 19th Century to the Present) traces the cultural and material history of appearances over more than two centuries. By Elizabeth Fischer, Magali Le Mens and Klimte, the book is by no means an encyclopaedia that confines and fixes definitions. It is a patchwork of stories that invites anyone interested in fashion, gender and queer cultures to take hold of it and build their own reading.
Stemming from the research project Queer Attitudes, co-funded by HEAD – Publishing and the Centre Maurice Chalumeau en sciences des sexualités (UNIGE), the book is published by art&fiction. Elizabeth Fischer, who led the project alongside Magali Le Mens and Klimte, is an Associate Professor (HES) in the Fashion, Jewellery and Accessory Design Department at HEAD – Genève.
The book’s release will be celebrated as part of LGBTIQ+ History Month with a presentation of the book, a quiz and a raffle on Friday, October 16, from 18:30 to 21:00, at the Centre Maurice Chalumeau en sciences des sexualités (UNIGE).
