As part of the MIDIS ARCHI lecture series, the Department of Spatial Design / Interior Architecture at HEAD – Genève is pleased to invite you to a lecture by Javier Fernández Contreras, which will take place on 29 September 2026, from 1:15 to 2:00 p.m. 

The Interiors of Social Media explores how social media is transforming contemporary architecture by examining interiors as spaces of staging and mediation. The book argues that platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, and Pinterest do more than simply represent interiors: they actively shape new spatial typologies that are simultaneously private and hyperpublic, domestic and performative, material and algorithmic.  Through a deliberately diverse collection of case studies — including celebrity homes, streaming rooms, humanitarian shelters, domestic environments for pets, and video games — the book examines how social media challenges conventional spatial categories. In doing so, it redefines the interior as the defining space of our time, where identity, consumption, work, and performance intersect through new forms of digital mediation.

Javier Fernández Contreras (ETSAM, 2006; PhD, 2013) is an architect, Associate Professor, and Head of the Department of Spatial Design / Interior Architecture at HEAD – Genève. His research explores the relationships between architecture, representation, and media, with a particular focus on the role of interiors in shaping contemporary life. He is the author of The Interiors of Social Media (2026), Manifeste d’intérieurs (2021), and The Miralles Projection(2020), and co-editor of Nothing About Interior Architecture (2025), A Nocturnal History of Architecture (2024), Intimacy Exposed (2023), and Scènes de nuit (2021). His critical essays have appeared in monographs devoted to Marie-José Van Hee and India Mahdavi, as well as in architectural publications including e-flux Architecture, PLOT, KoozArch, Burning Farm, and Drawing Matter.
