The Department of Fashion, Jewelry, and Accessories Design is pleased to welcome Jamal Nxedlana for a presentation on the cultural organization and digital platform Bubblegum Club, followed by a discussion about his work as an artist and cultural actor, as well as his approaches to and uses of fashion.

Amal Nxedlana (born in 1985 in Durban, South Africa; lives in Geneva) is an artist and cultural actor.
His practice explores how the Black figure is embodied and accepted, both materially and symbolically, while addressing themes of subculture, consumerism, and racialized expressions of identity in postcolonial contexts. More specifically, he is interested in fashion as a field of intellectual and cultural reflection, explored through the individual and collective cultural identities of the Johannesburg metropolis, at their intersection with geopolitical practices, technologies, and infrastructure logistics. He has exhibited internationally in galleries, institutions, and independent spaces. His recent exhibitions include “Data Tapestries” (2025), his third solo exhibition at No Man’s Art Gallery in Amsterdam; “Orlando” (2022), curated by Tilda Swinton at the Fotomuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland; and “The New Black Vanguard” (2019), curated by Antwaun Sargent at the Aperture Gallery in New York.

As a cultural figure, Nxedlana has founded numerous influential independent organizations. Among these is the Bubblegum Club, a digital platform and cultural agency that showcases innovative work and creates opportunities.
